Are all Bluetooth adapters the same

Have a generic bluetooth adapter on my desktop which won't talk to bluetooth monitor approx 25ft away ( 2 floors up). My netbook with built in bluetooth in exactly the same position works fine. Can only conclude the adapter is weaker, any recommendations for a more sensitive adapter ?

No, in a word. Bluetooth adapters are notorious for problems, many cheap generic adapters appear not to be compatible with win 7 for example, others may not have the same coverage.
Incidentally there are in fact 4 versions of bluetooth protocols, not many available on V4 - but here is a v3 from a reliable source, so if it doesn't work they will take it back

PS V3 is compatible with prior versions0 -

Bluetooth is designed to be a short range wireless communication mode. You MAY get 25ft with absolutely no obstruction whatsoever. Antennas really count and the one in your netbook is infinitely better than the antenna which is nothing more than part of the circuit board in the adapter you're using.0
