I understand your pain and difficulties with this problem. However, I think perhaps an auto is less likely to break than a manual. Reason being in a manual you move the lever which is directly attached to all the mechanics and the linkages etc etc, make a simple mistake and you've worn or broken it. Plus also you control the clutch. In an auto the car takes control of the gear changes and clutch, so you don't need to worry about them.

Just one word of caution with Auto's....Mine has just died

I'm really sorry to hear about your car. Would you mind telling me how old it was?

This is one of the things that is putting me off buying a used auto and why I'm considering a new one when I pass my test. All our savings will be going into buying the car so I want to make sure I get it right first time as we won't be able to afford another car if if anything goes wrong with it.

    auto gearboxes cant be repaired

Of course, auto boxes can be stripped down and repaired. You just need to find a specialist who'll do it at a reasonable price.
  • The car was 8 years old and ive done 68k miles, its immaculate and has hardly done any motorway miles, it really is just around country roads and school runs.
I got a quote to have it stripped and repaired and it was almost 2k, that comes with a 12 month warranty. Believe me when the hyundai garage told me it wasnt repairable i didnt just settle for that. Ive searched and searched and that was what i got for a price.
My cars probably worth 2-3k.to be honest.
I havent got 2k or anything like 2k not even in my dreams.

If i did have then id be better getting a manual, totally put me off auto's, even though i love driving them.
