Omg!! Price of peaches

Options
Not even sure if this is where to put this but has anyone else seen the price of peaches in Tesco?

Went there tonight to see what reduced bargains there were and noticed a punnet of 3 (punnets i thought used to have half a dozen or so in them) peaches and even though there was only 3 in the punnet they were only normal size. These were on offer  at £1.49. They were half price and were originally £2.99. This is a current offer so if you all make your way down to Tescos you can bag all these bargain peaches, NOT.

How b****y ridiculous. £1 per peach (original price). I still cant get over it.

  • Then again, peaches are not naturally in season in Europe at the moment. These are either grown under glass or flown in from further afield, which adds to the cost. Peaches are also very perishable and so there is probably quite a lot of wastage. Make me yearn for the summer and buying peaches by the kilo in Italy! Cut one up and let it soak in a glass of red wine at the end of a meal - best dessert there is for lazy peeps!

Now you say, yes its not the season for peaches which i wasnt thinking about at the time just stood in shock.

I dont know if its been mentioned anywhere on here or if you have a Lidl's nearby but if you do they have some great offers on at the moment on fruit and veg. Not just half price but much lower. I saw a mango in Tesco and it was £1.48, in Lidl it should have been 79p (so almost half to start with) but offer price was just 29p. Also advocadoes (spelling!!) were 29p, rocket salad 59p large tub, 4 ice gem lettuces 45p, just loads of great buys.

I was nearby (dont usually go in there to be honest) and needed some cheese so went in for a bit of cheese but instead came out with a large box of mainly fruit and bit of veg. Cheese? Well i forgot it.
  • It would be interesting to know how much farmers get paid fore their fruit and what the markup is. If they get treated the same way as dairy farmers I expect many small UK farmers barely make a profit, if any.

I buy my fruit from Waitrose mainly because it's the closest shop to me but also because of the quality. I just make sure nothing goes to waste. Markets are cheap but you need to be careful as you sometimes get sold rubbish. It would cost me me more i the end as I can't walk to town and cant carry bags so would need to park up. ANy saving would son be swallowed up!

There was an article in the paper about Tesco 'inflating' their prices so that they could then sell them at 'half price'.

I saw three courgettes for 99p the other week - at half price!! Normally 60p per courgette????? Nah

Look out for peaches going to half price in Tesco next month, if you believe the news the other day that they inflated their prices.

To be honest I try to buy fruit grown as close to home as possible, even if it is a little dearer I like to think it is supporting someone closer to home.

Half price offers also aren't always half price offers. Nothing to say £1.49 wasn't the normal price and they haven't put the offer on just to get people to buy them thinking that they are a good offer.

They do this with English strawberries when they are in season. The price is shown crossed out several times throughout the season making it look as if they have reduced it.

I must say I'm constantly amazed that people buy things like fresh peaches and strawberries in March :) Sorry, I don't intend to be rude but I wonder how we have forgotten when things grow. Well, I know the answer really, supermarkets stock everything all year round, so, people forget that peaches are a Summer fruit even in southern Europe.

Granted, March is a low point on the fruit calendar - there's English rhubarb but not much else seasonal. The English apples from store are going woolly. I concentrate on bananas, grapes and a few exotic things like pineapples at this time of year.

My general rule of thumb is 'if we can grow it here then I buy homegrown, preferably locally in season'. If it's something seasonal from other countries like peaches and nectarines then I buy those when they're cheapest (late summer) and if it's something that can't be grown here like lemons or bananas I buy imported produce.

This isn't exactly OS but please don't shout at me as it IS money saving.

My DD absolutely loves mango and as she was/is (to some degree) a very fussy eater, I use every opportunity to get "good things" into her. Each day for lunch I try to make her a fresh fruit salad. This mainly comprises of melon, strawberries, grapes and mango and occasionally kiwi fruit, blueberries, pineapple, etc. However, Morrisons charge £1.29 for a large mango and I don't tend to get very much fruit from it. Their small mango is £0.79 and I get even less from it. However, if I go to Sainsbury's, I can fill up a medium salad bar bowl with tons of mango for £1.99. I add a couple of grapes or a sliver of pineapple so the till operators can't say anything. :rotfl: I get FAR more mango than I would from two fruits for the same cost.

I think they may be on to me now though as the last couple of times I have been in, mango hasn't been on the salad bar. :rotfl:

My theory is that most fruit doesn't travel well, especially soft fruits like strawberries and currants. Apart from strawberries we hardly see any of the soft fruits in our local shop.

I think that growing your own soft fruit is probably more moneysaving than vegetables. Are you aware that there are two types of srawberry plants? The "June fruiters" and "Perpetual" or "Remontant" ones. The June fruiters have just one flush of fruit, the others produce fewer fruits at any one time, but produce over a longer period. Mine were still giving the odd fruits into November last year. Overall they produce a larger crop.
