You should be able to get the Northern Line back to Waterloo Station until about 1230ish. If you're staying at the weekend check for engineering. Plenty of night buses as well.
The London Ambulance HQ is just over the road so a lot of ambulance traffic but reviews say the double glazing cuts it out
The Travel lodge in Union Street is good and is just across the road from Southwark Tube Station (Jubilee Line). It has a nice clean 24 hour shop at the entrance and a tesco metro just around the corner. It also has free parking on the single yellows right outside at the weekend starting at 1230pm on a saturday.
You can check bus and tube times and routes and engineering on this website https://www.tfl.gov.uk
You can always get a black cab back to either hotel, it's not very expensive but bear in mind that their is a very high minimum charge for cabs from Leicester Sq so if you want a cab from there just walk a bit away from the square and get a cab. http://www.worldtaximeter.com/0 -
... the Princess Diana Memorial Playground in HydePark ...

Exactly what I was going to suggest, when I saw ~ 2y and 9y olds. We usually do it this way. We live 1.5h by bus from Princess Diana Playground. We go there first. Kids unwind after the bus. We spend there ~ 2h, have lunch (they do really good pizza there, on very thin dough, expensive though). It’s OK to bring some sandwiches, everybody does that. Than we go to the Natural History Museum, it’s ~25min walk, half – through the park and kids could feed the swans or chase the squirrels if the weather allows. In the Natural History Museum - of cause, its Dinosaurs time. But keep in mind, they have big animated T.Rex, and 2y old could be scared. My little one, now 5, still remember how she was scared when she was 2 (we didn’t know about animated dinosaur, it was our 1st visit). Basically it will take almost all the day, if you keep it slow so it would be easier for the kids (we usually go back the same way and have no escape from stopping at the playground for 2d time). If you go this way, you’ll get to the museum through the side entrance. If you use the central one – right near the entrance during summertime (you have to check when they start, they close it around beg of Sept) they have a pavilion with alive butterflies.0
