Can anyone who regularly does this journey give me some idea of extra time we will need to allow getting out of London on the Friday evening and how stuffed up the M4 is likely to get.
Trying to work out the best time to leave and how far we are likely to get that evening.
Planning on breaking the journey, so wondering where best to stay over night.

I can't really help apart from the earlier you get out of London the better on a Friday, but it might be easier for someone to help if they knew where in London you would be leaving from...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

What time?
Although you ask about the evening so I'll assume rush hour.
It'll probably be messy! After a couple of trips where it took over 1.5hrs from Tooting Bec to Hammersmith I now only get the train on Friday evenings and summer Saturdays.
A friend in Streatham with a place in Devon either takes the afternoon off or goes home for dinner and a rest before leaving at 8 or 9pm!
Unless there's been a crash it shouldn't be too bad after the M25. Unless you are really stuck getting beyond the M25 you shouldn't need to break the journey for more than a coffee.0 -
That's the kind of thing I'm wondering whether everyone heads off early cos its the bank holiday and the roads are much clear during the usual rush hour.
I think we will be unlikely to be away any earlier than 7pm.We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0
