Just go to PC world. They do have some of the best prices around.
However be aware of what you need or want. As they will try to sell you everything they can.
First off what antivirus do you currently use and are you happy with it. do you use paid or free? Im not going to recommend you one on here as even tho im from a security background everybody on here knows better.
second do you need microsoft office or could you use libre office?
3rd how non-tech savvy are you really. They do PC's setups instore for 30 quid so when you go home you just need to turn it on. I think that is 30 quid. Do you need or want that or have you got a friend who can help
they will try to sell you there wateva happens service agreement. to be honest its a ok'ish service better options out there tho.
From the sounds of it I dont think Linux is for you unless sombody else set it up for you or you had the real interest to learn.
they will try to sell you online backup for the amount it sounds like you need to backup. Skydrive is your best option, 25gig or free storage plus application to autosync0 -

What is needed is a basic of the shelf ready to run PC and install an office suite preferably the one the OH needs for work.
A basic desktop will be around £250-£300 depending on how long you want to search.

Many thanks for all of the advices guys - it's helped me immensely.
I'll go into to town with a view to shopping around with budget of circa£400-450 which I'm hoping should get me a basic - but efficient - PC, MS Office and a nice monitor.
Really appreciate all your help - thanks. Richard0 -
Look here £190.74.
Leaves a bit in the budget for a decent monitor and graphics card.
