Help needed with finding solicitor

I have just put an offer in on a property, that has now been accepted. I am now looking around for quotes for solicitors/licenced conveyancers to deal with the purchase and wondered if anyone has any tips/recommendations?
I want a solicitor who is 'on the ball' and will chase things up when neccessary and keep in contact with me. Of course I am looking for a cheap quote too but a quality service is most important as I want to complete asap.
I have had a couple of bad experiences in the past with solicitors and wondered if there were any money-saving tips in this area?? Are these fixed-fee licenced conveyancers that are online to be trusted?
I am in the Manchester city centre/Salford area if anyone can recommend a good local solicitor. Thanks.

We've just excahnged on the sale of our house using this online firm:
http://www.conveyancing-warehouse.com/
They are an online firm of solictors called Roberts. They've been really efficient and got things moving (even when our solicitor was on holiday at a crucial time her assistant arranged for one of the other solictors in the practice to sort things out for us).
We used them after reading several recommendations on here for them (search for conveyancing warehouse) and so far have not been disappointed. Mind you we haven't had their final bill yet so I'm hoping it won't be different from thier quote.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

I've used the same lady for my last few sales/purchases. It's all done by phone, post and email so you don't need to attend in person which is very helpful!
Her name is Janice http://www.curwens.co.uk/ and it's worth getting a quote - or even speaking with her, she's very approachable and helpful. I wouldn't go elsewhere now

I've used a company called click conveyancing, actually Barnetts from Southport, teice recently for sales. Excellent and cheap both times. 1st time I got a log in and could check progress, didn't bother second time. Stress free and effcient, can't recommend them highly enough. Also, all done by post so don't have to drop everything and go in to sign when it suits solicitor.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I second the recommendation for this firm. We are currently using them for the purchase of our new place and sale of our current property. We are a few weeks into the purchase and so far they have been really good.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

just a quick question on click conveyancing, i did a quick quote online and they were cheap compared to others, did you get hit with additional charges, i noticed on breakdown of costs there seems to be a alot of charges they could hit you with, such as a mining search... would they really try to charge that on?Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -

If they are anything like conveyancing warehouse you will be able to choose whether or not you want some additional searches doing, mining search was one of the ones we had a choice of.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
In some areas, such as N Staffs, a mining search is a compulsory requirement by lenders because.... it is a mining area.
Similarly brine searches are a requirement in parts of cheshire.
You won't be asked to pay for searches you don't need, but depending on where you are buying, you may need certain searches, and you will be advised on this.
Hope this helpsI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

We got charged exactly what we were quoted.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
