  • You won't know until someone competent reports on whats gone wrong.

Suggest using a time served and qualified mechanic who is prepared to compile a written report if serious negligence is discovered, and has enough gravitas to impress a small claims court if it came to that.

Hello anyone who has experienced problems with the big garages before please help as i'm not sure if i have a case or not!!

My wife took our 7yo megane to F1 autocentre 4 days ago for a service and mot, the damage was £300 covering 2 x tie rod end (£130), Brake fluid change (£32) and break clean!! (£34) amongst a few other small bits. We werent overly concerned about this as its an oldish car and i use it to commute to Birmingham everyday so just wanted the work done.

Today is sunday and my wife dropped me off with my family in swindon before heading off to meet a friend with our 6 month old girl in the back.

She didnt get far down the road before she phoned me telling me there was smoke pouring out of the front of the car. I called our insurance company and arranged the breakdown service to pick me and the car up and got my wifes friend to pick her and our daughter up.

On further inspection the mechanic couldnt get the car to start, it didnt do a thing, he thought the smoke is most likely to be the engine.

I was dropped home in Cheltenham with the car which is outside our house i am just wondering if we have a case against F1 autocentre or if it just bad luck with an oldish car!? Any comments greatly appreciated.

So it was ok for 4 days, including a drive of at least 35 miles from Cheltenham to Swindon. Then whilst driving, your wife found smoke pouring out of the front of the car?

Don't know what the mechanic was thinking (was he really a mechanic or just a recovery guy?), but sounds to me like it caught fire, hence why it won't restart.
If so, your insurance should cover this :)

the battery light is now on as well yes but it wasnt when the car wouldnt start initially!! My wife called f1 this morning as i am at work and they said she should bring it in and they'll have a look at it she replied 'the car doesnt start!' they said they wouldnt bring it in and so weve arranged for a mechanic recommended by one of our friends but he cant take a look until next week now! in reply to lasdt thread, yes 4 days and 35 miles!! fire would be covered by the insurance then?

The battery light will be on if the car won't start!
Assuming the battery is NOT flat, does the engine actually turn over when you try to start the car??

The light will only go out with the ignition on if the engine starts!
If the light didn't come on initially when the car failed to start it sounds like the electrics fried. Perhaps they happened to magically weld back together following the heat from the fire?

Yes, providing you have either TPF&T (F standing for Fire) or fully comp cover :)

To be honest I would not try and turn the engine over until the mechanic has had a look in case the timing belt has gone.
