Responsibilites regarding electrical items.

What are the responsibilites of business sellers with regards to second-hand electrical items? As long as the item was visually sound would a portable appliance test certificate be enough to satisfy the sale of goods act and other legislation that may apply? And would that also apply to larger items, say for instance electic fires, cookers or built-in air conditiong units, things that wouldn't be regarded as 'portable'?

As a business seller, your customers have the same rights as if they were buying new, so no, you can't just say sold as seen. The timescale can be a little different though in the fact they were second hand in the first place, so the age of the item is relevent, but not to the point where your customer has no rights.

A PAT certificate will only show that it is electrically safe and not that it works.
