Crackling noise and flashes coming from my plug socket.

I'm guessing it's time to get an electrician in. The socket is crackling and when I plug something in, a blue flash comes out.

Is this urgent as in do I have to stop using the socket or even all the sockets until it's seen to?

What qualifications should I be looking for in an electrician?

Thanks.

Or it could be the adaptor in the socket?

Sorry. Never mind. Something had fallen into the adaptor.

You should stop using the socket, it may be overheating and could be a potential fire risk

May just be the socket connectors are "tired" and not making a good contact with the plug pins

Or, you have overloaded the socket and the supply cable insulation is brittle & flaked off [like my mother's]

Not a big job to replace the socket, in fact it is within DIY for a competent handyperson [oh please do not post and tell me about the "regs" & Part P, it is not notifiable, unless in kitchen etc]
