Poplar(Tulipwood) is very stable and excellant in kitchens especially around heat sources.Birch faced ply for carcases and Poplar for face frames IMO..

Would also say 18mm MDF is fine for carcases as long as moisture resistant MDF is used, 2 reasons firstly obvious one its resistant to moisture and secondly it will take a paint finish far better than standard MDF...Personally I don't like any form of chipboard mainly due to the blunting of tooling during manufacturing and installation..

In my opinion you should go for a supplier who is prepared to stand by a reasonable quality guarantee (say 25 years).

Reject any company that only guarantees for 5years (or less - LOL!) but offers insurance at extra cost. Believe me the units will fall apart - I have fitted many kitchens in my time.

Well you could always try Vance Miller the kitchen gangster! He claims to be able to supply solid wood kitchens for cheaper price than MDF. Not too sure which kitchen company is his though as I think he keeps changing the name.
