Best prices for Timber?

I'm making a chicken run, and was wondering if a timber merchant would be cheaper then B&Q/Wickes etc?

I can see why the DIY business tends towards the sheds as I'm struggling to find any online prices or evening/weekend opening for timber merchants.

I'm in the SE London/Kent area - any recommendations would be great.

It's normally hard to beat Wickes for timber prices in small quantities. Even the trade only merchants near me struggle to match them

    I would agree with this.

OP - you need to balance out the perceived notion of "best price" with the tendency of timber purchased from most "sheds" to magically twist through large angles within 90 milliseconds of being carried out of the exit door of the premises in question.

I have found in the past that our timber merchant gave a discount when I purchased a quantity of off-cuts, I was making a side screen beside my workshop and it mounted to quite a saving.

Otherwise I agree with the previous posts, but maybe worth a try if you were passing a timber merchants.

All sound advice. I'd also add, wherever you're looking for prices, get it priced up using treated timber (sometimes called tanalised|) otherwise it wont last long outisde unless you're going to be OCD about treating it yourself.

ps: have a mate with a SELCO card? I find them pretty good.

I have to disagree, our local timber mechant is way cheaper than wickes or B&Q, for example this weekend wickes have a 25% offer on garden wood and other bits, a 2.4m sleeper is £35.24, my local timber place will do them for £15.95. Our timber mechant also stock all their wood vertically. Must depend on where you are I suppose but ours are brilliant. Same goes for our local small fencing company, they are way cheaper than the DIY stores and deliver for free too.
