What service pack should I be on

I am repairing grandmas pc. Only taken me 14months to get round to it! We've just kept putting start up discs in evey now and again if it plays up. But thats a quick fix becasue as she lives a distance away i can't get time to do a proper job until now. Problem with quick fixes is that the pc isn't up to date with service packs etc so now its time to deal with it properly. This is what ive done so far. To fix flashing 3,4 erratic error i've installed new ram so its now 3gb, installed a new CM battery to fix date/time. Then i wanted to put exploerer 9 on it and followed all the error messages which meant before it would download 9 i had to download service pack 1 and then service pack 2. So spent a few days and now have SP1 and SP 2 and explorer 9 all working fine and dandy now and all updates have been done. I have installed windows essentials as the free virus checker. So now how do i know what service pack i should now be up to date with?
I've got vista home premium 32bit. Thnx a lot.

Thnx. Interesting you mention XP3 as it keeps trying to do that as an important update but it gets so far and then it says insert disc. I haven't got a disc to hand. It is somewhere but I think now as I only need vista I don't need the important update for XP. xP was only added on for excel and word and powerpoint so that my nephew could do homework but we haven't needed it for a long time. So how do I permanently delete it from the update menu? I assume i must uninstall the programmes? Also when I changed the CR2032 battery when I turned the pc back on it said warning system battery voltage is low press f1 to continue so I did and its working ok so I assume it will just charge up itself as its used - what do you think? Its a Sony CR2032 lithium battery the same number as i took out so I'm sure it's the right battery. Tia.0

V proud of my endeavours with your help and a couple of others on here. I've probably taken it to be fixed at £35 a time about 4 times over the years when actually its this forum who've told me what to do and it's me who's fixed it - me a totally unqualified person in IT. I realise now what they've done is reinstall windows and fix the hardware issue but not then checked sp 1 is on there etc. Sp1 wasn't even on there so no wonder she's had all these software issues you see in my posts!
What do think I have to do about XP update - shall I uninstall all the progs? And that'll stop it telling me I need an update? thnx.0 -

Wrong! It is a standard Lithium battery, not rechargeable. How do I add a signature?0 -
Are you absolutely sure it's asking you to update Windows XP to SP3. I think it more likely it's an update to Microsoft Office XP. If this is the case, either do the update, or if you don't need/want Office XP remove it via the Control Panel > Add/Remove ProgramsHow do I add a signature?0

and in order to update Office products it is normal for the updater to ask for the original installation disk. How do I add a signature?0 -

The other update I'd for Microsoft silver lite. I haven't run that update as I'm not sure what that is. The low battery problem hasn't re-appeared so I'm hoping it's all ok. Thnx.0 -
lonestarfan wrote: »No it isn't asking me to update XP to SP3 it's just saying there is an update for xp. There are 2 updates left and the xp update is just saying update Xp then I do but part way thru it wants the disc. So I cancel the update as I suspect the disc is in my stuff in the loft or at grandmas house some distance away as we don't need XP I'll uninstall and I imagine it won't ask me to update after that.

OK, I still believe it's an update for Office XP, and as you've already said you don't use it, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and the update should stop appearing.
