For my son (15 year old Aspergers), it is the photo of him on stage drumming with his rock band.

According to all the specialists, he would never do anything like that at all, so it is a very special photo for me indeed.

So my take on extraordinary, is that autism need not be a barrier to the extraordinary life that others can obtain.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

One photo I have of my eldest sums that phrase up for me, it's a photo of him aged 8 deeply engrossed in a conversation with one of our neighbours at the time who was in his late 80s. Most 8 year olds wouldn't have time for an old man but Alec was fascinated by him and would talk to him for hours about how life had changed since he was Alec's age

The one thing which sticks in my mind from the huge number of ASD kids who have passed through my care is the lad who loved maps. He would stare at them in rapture, but he would remove borders and rewrite history; what if that war had ended differently, what if that treaty had not been signed, his knowledge was stunning, he was engrossed in his world and his issues receded when he was in "map mode".

I've seen this too and I'm fascinated by it. Kids working on a topic that truly inspires and challenges them can seem to lose their differences right in front of my eyes. I don't just mean when kids with AS are allowed to pursue their special interest - I mean where the kids are caught up in what they're doing and just loving it. I've seen it with kids with AS and kids with ADHD too.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

I've got ADHD. You can ask me about it but I may not remember to answer...

How about someone doing something ordinary, but obviously having so much fun it's extraordinary to them?
My autistic sibling took joy in the most ordinary of things... Perhaps a group playing a game but the subject is having the most fun? Everyone taking part but it obviously meaning more to the autistic one?

If you were going to take a picture of my ASD daughter, you would have to take it whilst she was doing one of her brilliant drawings. She is fantastic

if it was my son who is 16 it would have to be him playing with his lego/bionicles
he is amazing ...... he can build one animal for example a dragon and he can transform it into anything eg ... dog, cat, lion ect ect just by doing a few moves and he does it all from memory
it makes me so proud to see him do this that is his first love
