i believe you can actually be next of kin even if you are not a relative. OH has me as his next of kin (we arent married) as he is estranged from his Mum and doesnt want his Dad involved, and he has actually gone as far as to dictate on his care plan that should anything happen his family are not to be informed of his condition - the only person that is to be given info is me as his partner and carer.
My next of kin is my Mum - she isnt my oldest living direct relative, my Dad is, but if anything happened it would have to be my Mum who would have to deal with it as Dad isnt capable. So that's not set in stone - even if you have family, they dont have to be down as next of kin.

I am talking about legal definitions, which are important when you look at best interest issues. In that case, unless the next of kin has been displaced, the information I have given is correct.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just to let you know i spoke to cpn at meeting today he started to say it was down to postcodes where you live to what mental health unit you attened. I siad that my realitive needed safe guarding and that it was not his best intrest to attened the unit with this guy who caused him all these problems . I also said that i wanted to stop this meeting so i could get a member of mind to attend and speak to our local mp .

The cpn then started to say that given all what i had said and the history of this other guy messing with his medication to the point of him being hospitalised. He would stop the transfer and my realitive could stay where he is and dose not need to tranfer to the same unit as this other guy. So thankyou everyone on his for your help sometime common sence dose work .
i cant slow down i wont be waiting for you i cant stop now because im dancing

Brilliant! At least you know your relative is not going to be hampered. :)

Fantastic. Just a follow up about the postcodes. That's tripe. It makes it more doifficult for the professionals but doesn't bar someone from accessing a service, as you have clearly seen. Hopefully it will be a but smoother for you both from now on.
