Should I remove oil central heating?

  • It's really the cost of getting the gas into the house / new boiler etc as both I and HappyMJ said earlier.

This can run into several thousand pounds - which, even with the savings from having gas heating, take a long time to get to "break even point" - let along actually saving you money.

Oil costs about 60p/litre. Each litre of oil contains 10kWh of energy. Therefore each kWh costs 6p/kWh. Each kWh of mains gas costs about 3.5p/kWh on a competitive online direct debit tariff.

Thanks ... I've never been good at trying to work out the p/kWh with oil:o

Can anybody who has oil central heating give me an idea how it works, and how much it costs per month to heat the home? This house in particular is quite a large, 4 bedroom detached house with new double glazing and fairly decent insulation as far as im aware. Just a general understanding would be great

My last house was "the same" as yours. I had a 600 gal (2700L) oil tank. A full tank would last me just about a year, providing we didn't have a particularly cold winter.

    At 60 pence a litre that's £135 a month. Ouch....

If that were switched to gas on the best rate (in my region) at 27,000kWh then the bill would be £76 a month.

If the gas mains are just outside then on that usage level that would be something I would seriously consider.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
