Garage cashback?

I think I already know the answer to this, but would appreciate another opinion.

A friend recently had his accident damage fixed by a small independent car repair place. The accident wasn't his fault and he got the green light from his insurance company to take it to this garage after supplying their quote. When he booked it in, the guy that owns the place told him that he'd be getting something back, and mentioned the excess. When he picked up the repaired car, he handed him £130 cash.

My friend is now worried that he may have been implicated in something illegal - and it certainly sounds dodgy to me. Everyone knows that a lot of repair centres inflate their estimates once they realise that an insurance company is paying. I suspect that this guy has done the same, and has given my mate a share of the proceeds.

Any other views on this practice?

    What's illegal about it?

Your friend got a quote, passed it to their insurance company,
they were obviously happy with the quote, no doubt it was cheaper
than they could have got, or they would have said no.

Who's going to know that he got something back?

    Nothing illegal going on.

Sounds like he got a good deal, and can now pursue the third party for his excess back (assuming he has a receipt for it)
