My husband got a Tomtom XL2 for his birthday, but I don't know if it's faulty or he just doesn't know how to work it!

The instruction booklet's not very good at all and we can't get the sat nav going properly.

When we tried to download the supposedly free Tomtom HOME application, I was asked for £47! And when using it, the little arrow doesn't move as the car does, showing your progress along the route. It just stays still on the map of the route.

Obviously doing something wrong, I think...!!

Does it have a satellite lock, you need to stay in one place for a while for it to initially lock on. Is it plugged into the cig lighter, they do not work very well with a low battery. What car is this in, an athermic screen will block the satellite signal.

You may have tried to download a new map, home is free.

You could try their forums, which seem quicker than their support, though try that as well

If you scroll to two minutes plus, you see the arrow stays static but the map should move underneath it

Tomtom HOME is free. You pay for map updates.

The arrow should not move at all from the center of the screen. The map moves.

£47.50 is the price for 1 years LIVE services updates (traffic, speed cameras, weather).

Was the TomTom new when your husband got it. I believe in many models the LIVE services were free for the first year, so if it is over a year old, then TomTom Home is possibly trying you to encourage to renew it.

However it (the Home application) should work even if you wish not to renew?

Thanks all for the help. Finally got it going right...it had to be put on the 3D mode apparently.

And while it says the HOME app was successfully downloaded on the computer, there's nothing on the actual sat nav screen to say it's been downloaded.

If the unit is connected to the computer (USB Lead) When you switch it on, it will ask, do you want to connect to the computer, press yes, then it should start Home

You may also have a Home icon on the desktop, or in the quick launch bar, or if you click start then all programmes
