I got turned down twice on appeal from the job centre for a community care grant i then went to independent review (IRS) and they granted me £1200. The IRS are a seperate company from job centre and they look into your claim carefully and into detail and have a big sucess rate of overturning your grant.

Yes they are more thorough, but that's not the same as being more generous.

There may be other information left out - some form of residential care or homeless history along with a resettlement program in place but from what the original poster has said, the only category they'd have any chance under would be exceptional pressure.

But as the guidance says, everyone has pressures; it would need to be exceptional pressure.

I suppose medical backing might help the case.

There's a furniture scheme in our area who take donated furniture to pass on at a minimal rate to people on benefits.
  • The majority of people get the CCGs on appeal, can you appeal and show how you fit the criteria?
If not then charity furniture stores could help where you just have to pay £10.00 or so for delivery.

I have to say my cluster headaches have been "a bit better" using memory foam.

Not much very marginal indeed - but I do sleep better as more comfortable so not sure if it is the extra sleep as opposed to the effect of the pillow - but have to say there is more improvement.

A somewhat misleading statistic as it suggests a good chance of success merely by "appealing" until one sees that 90 odd % are not challenged.

Of course, this doesn't mean the 98% (whatever) are correct. Just that only when one is aware of the rules and can make a winnable case does one go for independant review.

No doubt some of those 98% could be successfully challenged but it seems clear enough that Social Fund staff are making the "correct" decisions, according to the rules they work to, the vast majority of the time.
