I have a router and was wondering if I connect more than one computer to it, does each of them have the same speed broadband that I have when just one is plugged in or is it shared between them?

on my router i can have up to 4 wired devices and quite a few wireless devices. the connection is shared between the devices, so if you have loads of devices you may notice the internet will be slower0

You will get full internet speed on each device, you will only notice it is any slower if you are downloading on all the computers at the same time. If you are just surfing the internet you are very unlikely to notice any difference.0

So if I set one up downloading and use the other one to browse, I shouldn't notice to much difference?
I only have a 512K broadband connection though0 -
Also depends the size of the stuff you are downloading, but just for basic downloads and surfing you shouldnt notice too much of a drop in speed0

we used to have 36 puters (2 classes) on 1 x 2mb connection at college.
not really a problem surfing as long as no one/a few, was DL movies etc!!!
the whole college only had 4x2mb lines and god knows how many puters.Get some gorm.0 -
The router and BT Broadband modem are connected to the same phone line. One upstairs and one downstairs. It won't let me use both at the same time, as I presume one of them is grabbing the line and stopping the other. They are to far apart to connect an ethernet cable to both and besides, my old PC doesn't have an ethernet cable port.
One is a wireless router, is the only way of connecting both at the same time, to use some sort of USB receiver thingy in my PC upstairs? If so, can it be any USB receiver or does it have to be the one that works with the modem?
It's a works modem supplied with my laptop. The laptop has the wireless receiver built in. Another way I thought of doing it was to somehow put an ethernet port into my PC - how I would do this I don't know? But then I could leave the router upstairs connected by the ethernet cable to my PC and use the wireless to use my works laptop downstairs?0 -
bit confused here, are you saying that the 2 puters are connected to the bt line but in different room sockets?
which puter has the router, and which the modem?
normal way to do it, is to install the modem/wireless router next to the desktop puter and let the lappy roam the house using the wireless connection and nowt else.Get some gorm.0 -
Want to do it that way, but puter doesn't have ethernet cable only lappy?0

PCI ethernet cards cost less than a fiver from the likes of ebuyer, just stick one in the PC (assuming it is next to the router, and ditch the modem).
Double check the PC doesn't have an ethernet slot first.
Make sure you encrypt the wireless.
Another slightly more expensive alternative is to buy a wireless usb dongle for the PC.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
If I was to use a PCI ethernet card, how would I install it?0
