Just replacing kitchen unit doors

Hi everyone
Does anyone have any experience of doing this? I told a builder that I'd like to do this and he sucked his teeth in a builder kind of way and told me that it would be more expensive than buying a new kitchen because the doors have to be custom made and something to do with the hinges being different on all doors.
I don't think he's trying to con me as he's the father of a friend of mine.
Has anyone else done this, or know of any tips?

Hi
I don't know what kind of doors your looking for but we done this two years ago and if your base units are in good condition then its quite a cheap and easy way to really change the look of your kitchen.
We got our new doors from B&Q and it cost us around £200 to do our kitchen, which i would say is a pretty average size. B&Q do half price offers on their kitchen doors fairly regularly. Might be an idea to check their website and see what offers are available just now, but be sure to go into the shop and choose which doors you like as its hard to tell the exact shade of wood etc. from the pictures online.
Hope this helps0 -
I think he may be.I don't think he's trying to con me
doesn't really square with the way factories workbecause the doors have to be custom made
All the kitchens (not that many TBH) I've had have all had the same sort of hinge
There was a post in the Grabitt (IIRC) regarding B&Q clearing out a whole load of doors and draw fronts on-line for a few quid each
If you have the standard sizes and can cope with the limited selection - Pine or Cherry I think might be worth a look unless all gone
Heres the link to Grabbit
But other the other hand you may have a non standard custome kitchen in which case you builder chap might be right0 -
highly unlikey to have unusual hinges etc..
there seems to be a few very common designs. and of course the most common is very very common indeed.
they made millions of em.
kitchen unit makers buy the hardware in, and there will be few manufacturers to choose from.
take a door off and take it to see at BQ etc..Get some gorm.0 -
I dont think he is trying it on. We did this to our kitchen over a year ago. Bought the doors from B&Q, hubby thought it was a straight forward door off door on as the doors themselves were standard sizes when we measured up but when he went to put the new doors on the hinges were in the wrong place. He had to realign the hinges to fit the new door to the carcass. It wasn't a hard job just a annoying one cos of the added time. Our kitchen looks great. He then replaced the worktop, pelmet/cornice, sink, hob, oven (proff fitted by corgi reg fitter), added some new units and breakfast bar. Our new kitchen cost about £2000 including all fixtures, tiles etc and decorating. My kitchen is big 17ft by 7ft.0

some of them will have the same hinges but fitted slightly up or down the door.

When the position of the hinge holes in the units are wrong and to save measuring every one I make a tempate by fitting the door to a thin ply wood strip which is the same height as the inside of the unit then clamp the batton to each and drill through it into the carcass.

We have just had our kitchen doors, fascias, cornices, worktops, sink, taps etc replaced by Dream Doors.
They have a website at
http://www.dreamdoorsltd.co.uk/content/5/1
They also fitted in a new cooker and hob (supplied by ourselves), and all in charged just under £3000.
The kitchen does look brand new, although I thought, expensive.
Good luck0
