Generating hydro electriicty

We have a small stream at the bottom of our garden and have been thinking whether it would be possible to generate hydro electricity from it. Just enough to provide lights in the shed and out buildings and some heating in the greenhouse.

Does anyone know how this could be done and if there are any grants or feed in tarrifs for this?

Thanks

The issue, as ever, is how are you going to store whatever you generate, since most of the power you require will be at night. The economics generally don't work out for the amount of hardware required. Do you actually own the stream though?
if you are generating on-grid, then there are FITs available for all forms of microgeneration, including hydro, so you'd need to talk to an accredited installer.

  • Thanks for your reply. We do own the stream and I will investigate FIT.

You may "own" the stream where it abuts your property, that doesn't give you the rights to dam and alter the flow of the stream.
