  • Hi, I've been looking at buying an external hdd for a while. Quick question: would you techies out there recommend Western Digital or Seagate? They both seem to have good offers just wondered if one was (markedly) better than the other?

Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives
call your credit card company, tell them that you want to leave, 99% of the time theyll lower your APR%
Remember when that Bank Manager or Salesperson smiles at you, all he sees is £ notes. Dont forget the motto, "the wider their grin, the more debt your in"

Both are better than Maxtor, who havent been so reliable of date.
However as Seagate bought Maxtor recently this may change either way. So it would be WD for me.

Just to say thanks for this. I love my laptop but am a bit of a technophobe when it comes to the bells and whistles. However my windows xp had to be re-installed recently when the laptop developed problems. I was lucky in that I was able to get my photos onto cd before the thing gave up, but I still lost a lot of data.

So I've been looking around for something easy to use to back up my hard drive.

Even better - I used my rpoints to buy amazon vouchers at a 10% discount, so I only actually paid £2 cash for it :j

Am hoping it will be as easy to use as people say..... :o

Jessops do a firewire version for £16 more. Is it worth the extra? I would like to transfer some video onto the hard drive would the firewire be noticably quicker?

Are these drives on Jessops online? Can't seem to find them.

Firewire will be quicker but that may not matter depending on the size of file you're copying. My My Book Premiums are used for camcorder projects and avi storage and playback and they perform very well. HTH

If the PCWorld "unobtainable" bargain 250GB Mybook external hard disk at £58 is a touch small, or you're just fed up seeing "not in stock" on their website, Amazon have dropped their prices on the larger models too.

Western Digital My Book 500GB Essential USB2.0 External Hard Drive £99.99 free supersaver delivery

Western Digital My Book 320GB Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive £85.10 free supersaver delivery

Western Digital My Book 250GB Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive £59.99 free supersaver delivery

    * Easy to set up, easy to use
    * The My Book drive turns itself on and off with your computer
    * The elegant case, iconic of a book, takes up less space on your desk
    * Inside the case is an exceptionally fast, ultra quiet, cool-running hard drive from Western Digital
    * Free Google software
    * Ideal for Simple add-on storage for your files, music, photos and movies
    * Adding virtually unlimited storage with multiple USB 2.0 external hard drives

Western Digital do other external hard disks for more money that have faster connections (firewire, ethernet). You can also plug in a second MyBook drive to these units (so buy 2 of the 250 GB ones instead of a single 500GB one) and have the second one keep a second copy of your files (or you can just use the second drive as more disk storage of course).

Although at £136 this is more expensive that the devices discussed so far, if you have a home network it may be more useful. Although you can buy enclosures and hard drives separately to do this, you'd be hard pressed to find a 500GB drive for much less than this.

    My Book World Edition

More than enough space to back up several computers. You can also get this in 320GB and 1TB! versions.
