Mould cannot be on dry slats - if mould is there the slats MUST be damp - or have been damp recently.

Or have been damp in storage in China where they were packed, we just don't know. Maybe the container leaked and they got wet that way. Maybe it was sawn and worked without being fully seasoned and sweated in the plastic packaging. Totally agree that dry wood would not have mold, luckily it isn't hard to dry out damp wood, and by removing any mold first, you'd be left with mold-free dry wood.

The OP above doesn't want to do that I see (our posts crossed) so your suggestion of cancelling and returning seems the best bet. I am unsure how DSR's work around deposits paid in store etc., so I will duck out of that one...although SoGA would be a robust means to reject under merchantable quality as I understand it.

I wouldn't accept a brand new product with mould on them especially if it's for children.I would give them 24 hours to sort it out or ask for my money back under Sale of Goods Act.If they do replace again don't let them leave until you've checked each and every slat for mould.
    Good luck

In no way I would I accept them with mould. Back at the end of 2009/start of 2010 I was hospitalised after being unable to breathe. The cause was found to have been a lung infection coming from mould spores I had inhaled from a neglected air duct in an office at work. In total I spent around 8 months virtually crippled and having to pop steroids pills. Totally not worth the risk to your childs health.

Just to say that DSRs don't apply as the item was ordered instore.

    But definitely reject under SOGA.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

How horrible for you and I can see why you are cautious.

Not to underappreciate your concerns, but do be aware mould/fungus is a HUGE genus/whatever the division is called. Mushrooms, penicillin, truffles, yeast (so bread, cheeses, tempeh, beer, wine, in fact all alcohols, marmite) are all more or less the same! A few moulds are pathogenic, a few beneficial, and most are absolutely benign.

Well I called them first thing and they said they had no more slats and none in till next week so I asked for a full refunded and asked them to come pick up the beds. They phoned me back half an hour later and ha found some slats from a higher spec bunk that would fit and were in perfect condition. Brought those round and they look much sturdier and were mould free and dry. He even offered to finish fixing the bed and take the rubbish away. The boys now have beds to sleep on tonight :)

You're quite right of course but without knowing what mould was on the slats I wouldn't want to risk it and certainly not with kids.
