Windows' file copying routines aren't very good at coping with errors; try using TeraCopy instead.

Forgive me, but what has trying to use an external hard drive got to do with wanting a new machine?

Try telling us the make, model and capacity of the External HDD, the version of Windows on your old machine (including which Service Pack it's on) and the full text of any error messages, and someone may be able to help with this.

Also, you've told us the type of games you used to play, but that isn't at all helpful when trying to spec a new machine. Tell us the type of games you do, or want to, play.

Low memory should not prevent you from attaching and using an external hard drive. 1gb is normally sufficient for Windows XP, so if you're getting memory low errors, you've probably gor lots of unnecessary running in the background

Post a HiJackThis log and the Commit Charge figures (commit charge total, commit charge peak, and physical memory total figures) (CTRL-ALT-DEL to open Task Manager. Figures are on the performance tab)
