Temporary addition to car insurance - non-UK licence holder?

Quick query if anyone can help please?

Several years ago, my BIL came home from Oz for a UK visit. Whilst here, MIL added him as a temporary additional driver on her car insurance so he could use her car. He used to live in the UK and still has a valid UK licence, so other than an admin charge and small additional premium, this was fine.

This week, his DD and her family have come to the UK to visit. Neither her and her hubby have UK licences. They asked MIL whether they could borrow her car, but we suspect the additional insurance (if they will cover them at all), will be far too high for MIL to pay this time and they would be better hiring from a local car rental place. Too late to ring the insurance to ask tonight, so just wondered if anyone has any thoughts please?

Try one of the short term insurance companies instead of your own.
Would think though that lack of UK licence will make car hire a cheaper option.

just shows how ridiculously risk averse the UK insurance market has become when it's cheaper to hire a car complete with insurance than it is to add someone to your own policy

Most of these are restricted to UK and EU licence holders only, car hire is the best option adding to your MIL policy will probably cost the same as the actual premium.
