I think you're dead wrong on this one. If money is taken from your account by DD then the critical fact is that it was taken by direct debit and therefore is covered by the direct debit guarantee. The OP talking to the fraud dept was a mistake as it does not need to be fraud, it merely needs to be by direct debit to be refunded.
That's totally wrong. If you find a DD on your account that is nothing to do with you - then getting the payment back via the DD Guarantee does not address the underlying problem? All you do is gloss over the real issue. Which could be fraud or could be that the originator has messed up the account number when taking it over the 'phone or online - and then submitting it via AUDDIS.
If you go via the fraud section they should both recover the money and resolve the underlying problem. The alternative is to go direct to BACS who will investigate similarly.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
