Please help

Hi guys:o,

Just a quickie, my friend has given me her laptop to basically delete everything from it apart from her photos and give it a good clean to speed it up for her as she is getting a new broadband provider and has loads of old carp on here.

Anyway so i have deleted everything i can and also signed her up and uploaded her photos to picassa on google which i use myself and think is fab just in case my laptop breaks down on me.

Ok back to the actual question i tried to download google chrome as her search engine as she is using normal internet explorer and it is all over the place, it wont open at all even though i've gone in changed the settings etc, her laptop is XP if that is any help but it does say that it can be used on this.
Another thing that i have got a major issue with is that for example it will let me on here (i her on the laptop typing this) but it will not go onto any site that will let me download anything, for example she does not have any securityo here at all, i tried going to filhippo to download avg as it is v easy to use, could get onto the site no problem but clicking on the download linls just automatically tells e that i have lost my internet connection when i know i haven't !!

I have tried to even go onto microsoft.com and it has blocked me, so i have gone into the setting and turned literally everything off, defender, firewall the lot, rebooted and it is still the same arghhh can someone please tell me what i am doing wrong, onl tring to help a friend out and i've broke her laptop :eek:

Could be an infection - try this.

Thanks but I can't get onto any of these sites at all, it tells me that I've lost my internet connection and I haven't as I can still access this site and post

Either its infected or you have inadvertently deleted some essential files.
For what you wanted to do I would have thought copying photos and personal files to external drive then doing reinstall would be best way to resolve sluggish performance.

Use a different computer!

Using your own PC, download the latest version of UBCD, follow the instructions to upgrade some of the A/v software, burn to CD then boot laptop from the CD and use the available AV offerings to scan for viruses.

I don't see what relevance changing broadband supplier has to do with cleaning garbage from the laptop, but IMHO you have two options:

1) Spend untold hours trying to download potential fixes for as of yet unknown problems and then probably giving up and reformatting the hard drive to reinstall XP from scratch; or

2) Backup the photos to external media, reformat the hard drive and re-install XP from scratch.

I know which one I'd be doing !
