I was just going to post something that I thought would be relevant then noticed the date of OP and realised things are different now to back then!!!
Anyway, what I was going to say was.......having attended the female catheterisation course on Tuesday (19th nov) most trusts are discontinuing the use of female catheters as they are continually proving to be too short and the nation are getting bigger. The only difference between male/female catheters is the length.
It's all very well the urologist and GP recommending the female catheter, but when was the last time either of them attended an update on policies and procedures? Unfortunately Dr's don't attend these courses and are shown and taught things on the job (usually the first year of practice and they are then just expected to know what they re doing. I have seen some choice insertions over the past couple of weeks!!)
I really hope your mum has sorted her problems with the catheter, I can only imagine how disheartening it must be for herxx

I too was reading this and was going to post about Nurses autonomy etc until I noticed the dates.
I will say though, as a nurse, I am the one who teaches doctors to insert catheters in real life when they hit the wards and it's 2am on their first job and first set of night shifts. I set up the trolley for them, check they have done the education and know what to do and then observe them actually inserting the catheter. They then email a link to their online training record and I sign them off as having done it correctly (if they have).Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
I agree that nurses nowadays are far different from the popular belief and conception of them, as in the 'Carry On' films.
My DH is Type II insulin-using diabetic, and he is the first to tell anyone who's interested that he gets far more sense, and help, from a specialist nurse practitioner than from anyone else in the medical field, even his consultant.
As the only difference between male and female catheters is the length, it seems possibly that as sacha28 says above, this is a decision which has been made at Trust level. Drinking enough is absolutely crucial.[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Æ[/FONT]r ic wisdom funde, [FONT=Times New Roman, serif]æ[/FONT]r wear[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]ð[/FONT] ic eald.

thescotsman wrote: »That would be ok in an ideal situation but what happens when its the district nurse team leader and the gp him\herself that you have issues with? Who do you go to for help then? I think I will explain my own personal situation a bit more. I have Spina Bifida and am doubly incontinent and use a wheelchair at all times for mobility. For over 2 years now I have had a pressure sore on the back of my leg. Now in that time I have only seen the GP twice because a) he first forgot that he was supposed to see me at home because I was actually confined to bed because of the severity of it. and b) he went on his holidays TWICE to Australia which was where he came from. My wound got so bad that I had to be admitted to hospital and the consultants said that he should never have let the wound, which after being tested was found to have 4 different kinds of bugs in it, get so bad and even suggested to me that I consider legal action. The nurse that was originally team leader was great but due to her own health issues she had to retire. The nurse that took over is the one that is causing me issues. Firstly she decided after only being in the job for a few days that I should only be visited once a fortnight and I dont understand how she came to that decision without first seeing the would herself. I know the nurses have meetings but I think she herself should have seen the wound before making her decisions. Now she wants my 77 year old mother to look after me on her own even though they know that my mother is diabetic, has arthritis in the spine, has angina and on top of that has just recently had a mastectomy due to breast cancer. In my opinion its like it was long ago before anti-discrimination laws came into force where nurses just dont care about their patients especially when the patient is disabled or elderly. They talk at you rather than to you and dont seem to care about your dignity or feelings as long as their jobs are made easier.
Hi, I can see that you are a new poster so wanted to say that its better for you to start your own thread as it stops people confusing the two different posters.
There is a link at the top left to click to start the thread for advice on your issues. I don't know much about home care but all that sounds awful so perhaps you need to get social workers involved.Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -
[STRIKE]I can't add anything else to what has already been said Minnie, but I am so sorry for your mum. I hope this is sorted soon, and yes you DO have a right to complain.
It seems to me that animals have more rights and better treatment than they elderly these days!
*disclaimer* Not that animals don't DESERVE good treatment; they DO, but it seems sometimes, that it's more acceptable to neglect an old person than it is to neglect an animal!

EDIT:
Forget it.
I just noticed that this has been bumped up from a YEAR ago by someone who only joined MSE today! And this is their one and only post.
Why would someone join a money saving website to bump up a year old thread about someone's mum struggling with district nurses?
What the heck?!
This is about the fourth time in 2 weeks, that a newbie has joined, and has bumped up a thread from a year ago! And each time, it's never anything to do with money saving! And each time, the newbie is PPR'd within a day or two.
Bit weird.
The OP's issue was probably resolved 11 months ago! (I hope so anyway!)Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
You're not singing anymore........ You're not singing any-more!0
