Hertz fuel options

Hi
I'm trying to figure out whats the best (cheapest!) way to fuel a hire car. Hertz have three options.
https://www.hertz.co.uk/rentacar/byr/index.jsp?targetPage=Refueling.jsp&EXTRAS_KEY=FPO&leftNavUserSelection=globNav_3_3_7
1) pay for a tank of fuel and return it with any amount of fuel.
2) pay only for the top up required when you return it.
3) top it up before you return it.
I think it was 50-60 quid to fill up a Ford Focus I rented a month ago (option 1). I'm going to be going right across the country so will probably use a tank or more. Any ideas? THX!

For me, 1st option looks best. Other are not guranteed to give you a good value. However, proper estimation of mileage is the key.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

I always like to get a car with a full tank and return it with one. That way you should just pay for the fuel you've used. So it's option 3. Option 2 means you pay for fuel at Hertz prices and option 1 means you'll pay for fuel you don't use.Can I help?0

Option 1 means that you pay their price (possibly expensive) for a full tank of fuel. then when you give the car back, any fuel in it is a gift to them, which they probably get to charge the next driver for putting in.
Option 2 means that you pay their price for the fill. You don't gift them any fuel, but you may pay a high price for the fuel put it.
Option 3 means you decide where to fill the car up; hopefully somewhere reasonably cheap, before just topping off near their site.
Go for option 3.0 -
Option 3 is cheapest. If they give you a diesel car then you may end up using less than a tank. Only exception to this was my employer had a corporate deal with Hertz and the price of refueling the car was in teh contract at a fixed rate. When fuel went up we realised that it was cheaper to send the car back empty as our contractual rate per litre was less than the petrol station. Perhaps thats why we no longer use them.................0
