Misspelt name on Abbey mortgage offer

Good Afternoon,

I'm just wondering if anyone can offer me advice, or has gone through the situation below?

We're due to move next Friday into our new home (new build), but have managed to have problems now.

Our solicitor faxed Abbey on the 9th of May to request funds for our mortgage, but he rang them today to confirm the money would be available next week and got told there was a problem.

They spelt my wifes name incorrectly on the mortgage (Claire instead of Clare), and my solicitor mentioned this to them on his fax to them on the 9th of May. Abbey tried contacting my mortgage broker, but she has been away for 2 weeks, and they never told my solicitor hence it was left so long.

My mortgage broker has now filled out a form to amend the name, but they've advised me that 3 things could happen:

1) They could just amand the name straight away
2) They would have to credit check us again
3) They might even ask for additional documentation

We've been advised that we should get a response by the close of play on Monday, but it will leave me worrying all weekend, and my wife will be worse.

Looking at Creditexpert, our scores are actually higher then they were when originally checked, and we show as having less debt. Our mortgage application went straight through first time, and wasn't referred to an underwriter.

Should I be worried that we won't move next Friday, or that we won't get the mortgage at all? Has anyone been through this before?

Thanks for any help with this

It's unlikely to cause a problem and should be remedied relatively quickly.

    Thanks for your comments.

Our mortgage broker didn't do anything to ease our fears, hence I came on here. I did google first, but you generally just get horror stories, and my wife is still nervous as we're so close to moving.

You will get credit checked again but if you passed with the wrong name then in theory you should be in a better position using your correct surely.

Well, that does concern me a little I must be honest.

Firstly, it will take longer then just editing the name, and secondly it leaves a larger scope for things to go wrong.

I rang our broker first thing this morning, and she said that she'll catch up (as has been off for 2 weeks), and then get back to me. She said that she thought it was probably already sorted, but I'm still waiting for a call to confirm.

I don't take our mortgage brokers word as gospel anymore due to her saying things would be fine before, and they weren't. Therefore until I hear back from her I will worry.

    Abbey/Santander are a joke...

Our solicitor rang them this morning, and they advised that the case is with the underwriter. (S)he needs to decide if the current offer can be amended, or if a new ooffer needs to be created with the correct names. If a new offer is created, then our solicitor needs to refax applying for it etc.

Apparently Abbey are aware of the urgency of our request (due to moving on Friday), and have it down as a priority case.

I just can't believe that her name having an "i" in has caused so many problems.

As you can imagine, we're really stressed now as we keep getting told it will be sorted soon by our broker, but it still hasn't been!

Who spelled the name wrong in the first place? You/your partner, your broker or Abbey/Santander?

Firstly - you are correct; Abbey/Santander are rubbish and they are not dealing with anything quickly at the moment.

Good news is that there is no way they would have underwritten the case (which they do in advance) unless they had linked your Wife's credit file, otherwise they would have been asking way too many questions and you and/or your broker would have realised there was an issue.

Sit tight, there will probably be more stress to come but cannot see anything other than Santander amending the mortgage offer. Whether this will be done within the time necessary will depend upon how much grief you and your broker can put them under.

They also have a pretty quick completions process from when funds are requested, so is pretty quick also.

    Good luck

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for your reply.

Well, I'm at a point where I'm giving lots of grief to my broker (ringing my broker and her assistant quite a lot - Well, 3 calls already to them today). I'd assume they'd be sick and tired of me soon. My broker did say that Abbey weren't very good.

In hindsight, I should have taken note of all of the negative publicity surrounding Abbey/Santander.

Your reply has helped destress me a bit though, so thanks.

    Hi Jellybean,

I missed your question, so sorry. It was our broker who spelt it wrong originally. We did tell them, but I can only assume that they didn't correct the spelling before putting it through Abbey.

We should have noticed when the offer came through, but I really just looked at figures.

If this was my case I would be chasing every hour as it would be an embarrassment to me and my business making the mistake.

I am sure your broker views this the same way and will be calling up at all hours.

    Good luck
