Creaking Stairs

Good afternoon all,
I have a problem with my top 3 steps on my staircase (the largest steps), they creak badly. When sitting downstairs it sounds as if the person is going to come through the stairs.
We recently had new carpet fitted and I took this opportunity to screw down the front of the the offending stairs, but has made no difference.
I cant get access to the underneath of the stairs as that would involve ripping through the plasterboard in the understairs section of my lounge. Even if I did that I am not sure how i would get to the top 3 steps anyway.
All the other stairs are absolutely fine, it is the larger 3 steps at the top (where the staircase veers off to the right on to the landing).
It is so loud and I am at a loss at what to do to rectify it, at the moment I am trying to stand on the front lip of those steps or missing a couple of them out altogether.
Thanks in advance.
