Chrome no longer opens directly to home page

Following some recent automatic update or other, my Chrome browser no longer seems to open automatically on my desired home page but goes to a 'tab page' of most recently visited sites.
Oh, joy.
Two questions:
1. Was there ever a more obvious example of the overpaid operatives of the nerd industry trying to justify to the boss their positions with yet another 'idea of the week', having spent said week mostly slaying dragons on screens and sending each other emails ending with the word 'dude'?
2. Is there any way of getting rid of the stupid thing and reverting to the straight-to-home page process?
Yes, I know it's only one more click but surely I am not alone in feeling this kind of thing is just ridiculous.

Nobody is forcing you to use Chrome.
It belongs to Google, not you. They can do anything they want with it, within legal limits.
It is simply part of their income-generating business equipment.
It just happens to display web pages on your computer.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
