Also my brother is leaving on Saturday to go and work abroad for 2years so have been meeting up with him, it's going to be so weird when he goes, not looking forward to it at all. We usually see each other every few months as he lives about 200miles away, but often chat on the phone, and not going to be able to just pick up the phone and do that, or know that he's within driving distance if needs be :(

Have a look on the utilities tab above, Magic, you can phone abroad for virtually nothing nowadays, and of course skype is free.

Hope the inquest goes ok for you. :A
    Hope is not a strategy.

So for the 1st time ever I've done a chart to work out their value - really dont know what I am doing. I know share prices are at there lowest now but even so. I know the dividents are only about £100 a year now but I never really connected this to the price of the shares.
If I have done this correctly the final total is really pitifull. If OH got ill and had to take early retirement they would hardly fill the gap between out outgoings and the incoming works pension for more than a year or 2.

I think we have always assumed that the shares as the final fall back position would keep us afloat and even comfortably in the style that we would like to become accustomed to in our decrepitude but I think we have been deluding ourselves.

Forgive me, but you sound like you don't have experience of shares, don't make any rash decisions.

Your share values may be low now, but the price only matters when you sell them. So no point crystalising the loss by selling out at a low point.

Remember also the yield. If the shares in one company are worth £2000 and they pay a dividend of £100, you are getting a 5% yield which is more than the interest if you put the money into savings.

Not a great deal to report but had the Mackays seville Marmalade SEL @ 10p but alas the fake pirates had plundered the shelf!

    Petrol @ £1.32 a litre the cheapest I've seen for sometime!:D

Also triplewax car shampoo 2l @ 97p at that price I may start using it on my barnet and my freshly waxed back, sack and crack!

    Anchors aweigh:p

Further to this...in the clearance aisle, they still had a load of the passover stuff, not greatly reduced but worth keeping an eye on, loads of grape juice and wine etc....:D

    Done!

Rang the freephone number and cancelled yesterday policy.

Then went back and redid the insruance, got a slightly different ammount - £3 less?

Anyway I am not sure why I did not think of Quidco, I checked Topcash and thats what I mostly use as ther eis no annual fee. But I got pet insurance throught Quidco a couple of years ago - took 6 months to get the cashback but it arrived in the end :D

How long does it take before the gift card arrives?

Did you buy a combined policy (building and contents)? Is it too late to cancel?

Becuase I think this offer is better:

    http://www.quidco.com/sainsbury-s-bank-home-insurance/?ac

    £70 cashback.

A few months ago my Mum's houses back in Wales and in Manchester were due for renewal. My mum was paying approx. £100 per year for each house on building insurance alone.

So I said, 'Mum, give me your card and I'll deal with it'.

    :cool::D:cool:

    10 minutes later...BINGO!

Came across Sainsbury's Home Insurance offering a £30 Sainsbury's giftcard PLUS £60 cashback via Quidco for a combined building and contents insurance policy.

Got quoted £90 for house in Wales and £120 for house in Manchester.

So free building and contents insurance with one house and £30 for the other. Both gift cards have arrived since and now I'm waiting on cashback payout (paid after 6 months of policy start date).

My Mum has since let me keep her debit card.

Yes, complete novice, all I do is the ss tax return.

As you say the prices are at an all time low and they have to pick up at some point.

I've worked out the yield and its worth about 1.5% at the moment which is dire. When OH 1st got them we were getting £1000 a year which made a big difference to us then - mind you I suppose the yeild was still low as the total values were more then

It depends where he is going. Some countries you can get free calls to. We are with sky and there is a limited number of countries you can get free calls to eg Germany.

Otherwise google for cheap overseas calls. You get an access code and you type this in before you ring the international dialing code and then the mobile/landline number.

My eldest is in Cyprus and I use an access code from a website called "ratebuster" I think the access code itself its about 15p or 20p and you pay that even if you dont get connected. But I always get through using the ratebuster access code and then its 2p per minite so we can talk for ages.

We have tried skype a few times, son has to use his laptop in the corridor but even so the signal is rubbish, keeps dropping out. It seems to be dependant on the weather.
