Fresh from the success of renwing the house and buildings insurance I had another look at the family finances.
I've got no JTD vouchers to use up so no excuses to do a £40 T shop, used up all of my extra nectar points vouchers so again no excuse to go to Sainsburys. I've checked my Topcash and Quidco, loads of odds and sods tracking but nothing going to paidI sold a book on Greenmetropolis last week but I've got another day to go before I can do a withdrawl. I sold 2 things on ebay on Sunday but neither have been paid for yet.
All minor annoyances.
I then had a look at OHs shares. he inherited a few shares from a parent when they died about 20 years ago and he has held onto them mostly. We have had a few very desperate times over the years when the kids were at home and some were sold but mostly they are intact.
We have alwyas regarded them as our retirement back up plan.
Apart from filling in the ss tax form to pay the extra bit of tax I've never taken much interest in them.
So for the 1st time ever I've done a chart to work out their value - really dont know what I am doing. I know share prices are at there lowest now but even so. I know the dividents are only about £100 a year now but I never really connected this to the price of the shares.
If I have done this correctly the final total is really pitifull. If OH got ill and had to take early retirement they would hardly fill the gap between out outgoings and the incoming works pension for more than a year or 2.
I think we have always assumed that the shares as the final fall back position would keep us afloat and even comfortably in the style that we would like to become accustomed to in our decrepitude but I think we have been deluding ourselves.
So its back to plan A, saving as much as possible and keeping outgoings as low as possible just incase OH does retire early. My f-i-l was only 10 year solder than my OH when he died and it prays on your mind, how long more can you keep working and how long more will your health last.
And I dont think I am going to tell OH about the share price chart - no point in depressing him“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. I am thinking there is a tiny Tesco in Abergele - thats not it is it?
I seem to be missing a Tesco“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -
Good Morning everyone!
Sorry for not keeping up and lurking a bit but I've been so busy trying to get everything together for the inquest next week. It's starting to drive me insane now.
Also my brother is leaving on Saturday to go and work abroad for 2years so have been meeting up with him, it's going to be so weird when he goes, not looking forward to it at all. We usually see each other every few months as he lives about 200miles away, but often chat on the phone, and not going to be able to just pick up the phone and do that, or know that he's within driving distance if needs be
Oh well, enough of my ramblings, it's a gorgeous day today, made me feel brighter driving in to work this morning, hope it has the same effect on you all.
And hugs to snap and Tweets, and all others who are in need. :A0 -

Oh! Might have to experiment with this a little today. Must be a store specific issue.0 -
If you are due for renewal of your house insurance do an online quote from Sainsburys bank, save the quote, you need to input your nectar card number as it gives you 3 months free). Then go back and adjust the figures again next day and then wait. I did this and a few days later I got an email to say if you take out Sainsburys home insurance you also get a £30 gift card :T So I've saved £160 plus I have a £30 gift card coming eventually and I also get my nectar points doubled so thats worth about another £30!
And I've paid in full for the 1st time as I objected to paying an extra 10% for the monthly installments.
Also another small ammount shaved off the monthly outgoings
Did you buy a combined policy (building and contents)? Is it too late to cancel?
Becuase I think this offer is better:
http://www.quidco.com/sainsbury-s-bank-home-insurance/?ac
£70 cashback.
A few months ago my Mum's houses back in Wales and in Manchester were due for renewal. My mum was paying approx. £100 per year for each house on building insurance alone.
So I said, 'Mum, give me your card and I'll deal with it'.
:cool::D:cool:
10 minutes later...BINGO!
Came across Sainsbury's Home Insurance offering a £30 Sainsbury's giftcard PLUS £60 cashback via Quidco for a combined building and contents insurance policy.
Got quoted £90 for house in Wales and £120 for house in Manchester.
So free building and contents insurance with one house and £30 for the other. Both gift cards have arrived since and now I'm waiting on cashback payout (paid after 6 months of policy start date).
My Mum has since let me keep her debit card.

2 days of sunshine, how fab is this :T
Started the day well by deciding it was not winter anymore. I store winter jumpers in a blanket chest so I went and had a look in it, some jumpers never saw the light of day this winter.
So I sorted out a big pile to take to the charity shop and a few things to go on ebay for 99p.
Then the huge pile of jumpers on the dresser I've either put in the chest or in the wash basket and now the bedroom looks less messy :T“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Could anyone please tell me if the 'price flop' coupons for root veg and any veg - work on potatoes?? Planning a shop and don't want to get caught out!!
Thanks all xx
I got 2 veg ones to work with potatoes, though I had to go to CS to get the second one put on.Hope is not a strategy.0 -
