im looking to renew my car insurance Ive been driving for 29 years without an accident [touch wood !] until now insurance companies have asked about ncd 5+ years but today they are asking up to 20+ yrs ncd, to complicate me even more Aviva have sent the renewal through with only 5 yrs ncd but i had 9 yrs before i went with them and i have the paperwork to prove they accepted this .
so after all that what should i declare as my no claim years?

See if they will reissue you a proof to say 10 years.
If not, then you are stuck with the 5 you have proof for, unless you have your own paper trail to show all your NCD.0 -
we have a paper trail for the 9 yrsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Ive emailed the relevant info , can you tell me why Aviva only issue 5 yrs when they accepted the 9 yrs proof we provided a year ago ? ive not come across any other company that does this. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Many other companies do this - normally letters say 5 or more years.
Most the time it is at least in part to do with IT system constraints - many insurers systems are rather on the aged side and so thinks like NCD is 1-5 years is hard coded into the system in hundreds of places. To change it is a massive undertaking and given it is only of use when customers are LEAVING you would struggle to write a business case to support the IT investment.
The other common issue has been that something in the region of 85% of people have 5 or more years NCD so call centre agents have bad habits of prepopulating the field with 5 given it makes no difference if its 5, 6 or 26 and to prevent people calling up to correct it from 5 to 6 when it makes no difference the documents just say "5 or more"0 -

Aviva only recognise 5yrs NCD even if you came to then with 9yrs NCD. As long as you got 5yrs NCD that should get you the maximum discount avaliable from every car insurer.0
