LAN address change

Don't know exactly when this started to happen (probably after I fiddled with something) but my son's desktop used to have a 10.0.0.x type address (when you do ipconfig) like the other computers in our house. However now he gets a 169.254.0.x address. Anyone know what causes this and how to get him back into the fold with a 10.0.0.x?

Sounds as though you've taken the static IP address out from network properties...

right click network neighbourhood.
properties
right click the network adaptor
properties
click tcp/ip
properties
add in the IP address you want to use and add the gateway and subnet addresses as well, you should be able to get these off the other machine in the network

Just realised though what was going on.

I re-enabled the wired adapter in my son's computer a little while ago and forgot to disable it again when I'd finished. The 169 address is actually this adapter (not attached to network cos using wireless adapter). There is another entry for the wireless card which is a 10.0.0.x address. So all is well.

Just for your information, a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is an erroneous network ip. It's a fake one to indicate something is wrong with the network card - like when it requests an IP from a DHCP server, but cant get one.
