Tax credits are a means tested benefit, if you were not intrested in claiming childtax credits this thread would not have been posted now would it?0 -

I have written to them and sent it today- when I hear back I will post an update.
I am grateful for the advice and used it in my letter.
Many Thanks everyone.
I wasn't suggesting you misunderstood, i meant that the adviser on the helpline didn't understand the guidance.

UC isn't law yet!! Nobody will be on UC till Oct 2013 and existing claimants won't be moved over till April 2014 at the earliest, probably later. It is true. The WTC is changing over to Universal Credit and all savings have to be declared, If you have over £6000 you will lose some WTC and if u have £16000 you will no longer be entitled.
The OP is talking about a issue with tax credits now, so UC is irrelevant.
(Even once on UC, there are transitional rules which will protect claims of those with capital, as we've discussed here before).0
