RBS Unauthorised Charges Question

Hi all, need some advice.

Bought a weekly ticket on the train for £155 on a Thursday as I get paid on a Friday. However my line manager had not authorised my online timesheet before he went on holiday.

When my timesheet is authorised I get paid same day but not in this case.

The £155 put me into a unauthorised overdraft at a cost of £6 per day I was over the £10 overdraft buffer.

When my line manager got back as there was no secondary authoriser it had been 10 days until I got paid into my account but on that same day RBS reclaimed the £155 back and my account was now containing my salary plus £155.

I called the train company and explained and paid the £155 (although they didnt have any name or address details) but I have had a letter through from RBS saying they are going to charge me £60 at the end of the month for the unauthorised overdraft. This is where I have a bone of contention in that although I was over, yes but they reclaimed it back, so surely why should I have to pay the £60 when they havent honoured the payment and if they weren't going to honour the payment then I wouldn't have been overdrawn.

I must add that I have done this before and got my salary paid in a couple of days after so have been £155 in the red for a few days and money goes in and clears it. I also get paid weekly and regularly so they know enough money always goes in to cover it.

Would be grateful to know if I have to pay this £60 considering they did not honour the payment?

TIA

My feeling is that you owe the fee, although you can appeal to their better nature by asking for it to be reversed.

Your real grievance should be with your employer as they put you in this situation.

RBS are not generally clairvoyant enough to know whether you are still employed on a week to week basis or what you may earn, so I wouldn't rely on this for budgeting purposes.
  • Thanks both, I suppose what I am thinking is that I am paying a premium for a service that I never got if you see what I mean?

@MonkeyMad, I have managed to get a 2nd authoriser now and been promised it wont happen again. I get my timesheets submitted as soon as I finish the week at the earliest opportunity so this doesnt happen and been told by my line manager it wont happen again
