silly question about plasterboard

Does new plasterboard have to be plastered, or skimmed, before tiles are fixed?

Nope - just prime it with a suitable primer - your tile outlet will advise you which one (dependant on which brand they push).

Personally I prefer to skim it up first tho.

That it, unless, we're talking bath/shower.. where I'd definately advise skimming up first... or using aquapanel....

Endless possibilities about to come forth... stand back!

You don't even need to prime the plasterboard. Both mapei and bal do self priming adhesives.

I think this is what has been used, if that makes a difference to the answer

That'll be OK. Prime your boards with Primer G first though. If in the immediate area of a shower tank it first.

Whats the weight per m2 of your tiles? If its more than 20 kg/m2 including an allowance of 2½ kg for addy and grout then skimming it first is a no no. That will be 8mm thick ceramics or 7mm thick natural stone.

In any event theres little point in skimming it in reality. - just adds to the cost.

    Cheers

Weight limits for skimmed plastered surface including adhesive is 20kg/m2.
For bare plasterboard it is 32kg/m2.
There is no need to prime plasterboard if you use SPF (single part flexible) adhesive.
However, if used in ashower area or above a bath, tanking is advisable (or IMO a must).

    Hope this helps clarify things.
    Good luck
