Opening a bank account

My son has used a different surname since he was very little than the name on his birth certificate. Is there any way to open a bank account for him in the name that he uses. I live in Scotland, in case that makes a difference. Thanks

If he has the relevant ID that the bank requires in the name that he uses then yes, he'll be able to open an account in that name. So for instance, passport, driving licence, bills, debit/credit cards, pay slips, etc. An example list for RBS is here:

I shouldn't think so. He'll need ID and one of the forms of ID is an original birth certificate. I think if it was possible or more accurately legal I would have an account in the name of M. Mouse.

We read all the time about those who have bank accounts in an assumed name but I think that could be fraud.

He will need to have a legal document such as a deed of change of name before he can apply for a bank account or even driving licence or passport.

There is no such thing as a deed poll in Scotland. You just might find it difficult to convince the bank though. You might want to contact the General Register Office for Scotland.
