House swap??

My wife has got a teacher exchange and we are all going to live in the USA for a school year. My question is what do I do about house insurance as we are swapping houses with the american teacher. We are mortgage/owners and currently have buildings and contents with Halifax. Will the null and void any claims because we are not resident or will we have to get landlord type insurance. Thanks

Will your house be empty of will you have tenants.
If it's empty I'm pretty sure you won't be covered.
If you have tenants you'll need lanlord insurance.

You need to ask the Halifax about this. I assume there is no money involved, it's just a straight house swap. We were insured with the Halifax when we did a 3 month exchange to New Zealand a few years ago. They weren't at all concerned so long as the house wasn't left empty for a long period

They are not tenants and you are not a landlord if no money is involved.
  • Spoke to Halifax re house insurance and they seem to think I need Landlord insurance despite the fact that no money is changing hands. I did get a preliminary quote through moneysupermarket and it turns out it is cheaper to have a complete stranger in my house rather than my own family! Landlord insurance it is then

If Halifax are unable to play ball, suggest you go to one of the companies that offer a special scheme for teachers. This can't be the first time this situation has cropped up.
