North West facing gardens

How long does the garden have to be for it not to be a real problem?

    Ln = H tan ( Dlat + Dobl ) - Lh

    Where:
    Ln = Length of garden in shade on shortest day in a due North direction
    H = Height of house
    Dlat = Latitude of location of house or longitude
    Dobl = Angle of Obliquity of the Elliptic [tilt of the Earth's axis relative to axis of Earth's orbit about the Sun]
    Lh = distance from the point under the highest point of the house to the north wall of the house in a due North direction
    Provided, obviously that ( Dlat + Dobl ) < 90deg, otherwise the property will be within the Arctic Circle. You can make your own corrections to allow for any slope within the garden, but again if this slope added to ( Dlat + Dobl ) returns an answer over 90 deg, the garden will be in shade all day.

    Wouldn't it be easier to move to a south west facing garden, than to work out the maths?

    What will you do when you find the perfect length? buy everything in its path knock down and extend garden?

    We have a 50ft garden and it faces NE. We live in a bungalow. There is sun in the garden all year round, although only in the far corner in the depths of winter, and of course, providing it is a sunny day!
    It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

    North facing garden sun most of the time, when no clouds and raining (so not much regardless of where you are facing atm).

    I walk 3 metres for sun might struggle after 90years old

    Starbrite - obviously not but thanks for the helpful reply . I have found a house I like with a NW facing garden hence my question if it was as easy to find a SW facing one I would but alas the house we like happens to be NW again but 65ft.

    Thanks for the equation, I will try my best!

    I have a question. When people talk about eg north facing gardens, which way do you stand to know where the garden faces? If the garden is to the south of the house, is that a north facing or a south facing garden? I'm assuming that would be south facing (so a garden therefore faces away from its house), but I'm not sure.

    Give me H, Lh and your latitude and I'll do it for you

    If I have identified the property correctly on the satellite, then the garden faces NW

    From the EA's photo's taken (7,10,11), by the looks of property bee, in February, how does this compare with the property you are considering?
