how do probates work exactly?

we have seen a bungalow but one of the potential inheritors says that it went into probate in November so he prefers to wait for probate to finish before he sells this. I am not sure how this whole probate thing works as not sure of timescales. can anyone help on this front?
thanks in advance.

Probate is there to establish that the dead persons wishes will be carried out and that any taxes/duties are paid. It usually kicks in following the death of a surviving spouse, generally because most people leave the house and almost everything to their other half and there are no taxes to pay between husband and wife. Basically a Grant of Probate is issued which will enable the executors of the will to sell off any assets but before the Grant of Probate is issued all the formalities have to be sorted out. If the person left a lot of money then most people get a solicitor to sort it all out. If the person did not leave much then the family can do it themselves but they have to go to a special Court – which is just a room with a couple of officials there to make sure you have done everything properly.

As for how long it takes well if there are no complications about 3 months. If there are complications who knows?

with the guy we met who is supposed to be the executor of the will. he said he had sorted out all of the shares and now was dealing with the house but he wanted to wait till the probate was sorted. i dont know if they had any other money than this.
what are the formalities when someone passes away? sorry if ignorant. its just if it is just a question of selling the house now i dont actually understand where there is a hang up. i think that he may have had an issue with his sister but not sure what exactly. also how does the tax work if it is brothers and sisters who inherit. i imagine there must be more tax to pay?
