Ladder hire- invoiced wrong, can they ask for it back?

Hello, I hired some ladders from a tool hire place and paid a deposit. They came to collect them after a week and I had my dad there to hand them the money we owed. They gave him an invoice which had the deposit we paid but also a part that stated cash received which should have been the remainder of what we owed. But.. they have read it wrong and took it as though they owed us that amount. Despite my dad telling them we owed them, they insisted not and gave him the money. He was not asked to sign anything.
Im just wondering, if they realise the mistake, are they able to request it back as it was their error?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    1. Of course they can and they will when the penny drops as it inevitably will when the cash book doesn't balance.

    2. Assuming you have a conscience then you should let it be your guide on what you should be doing right now.

    Cheers

    Just pay up.

That is someone's business and livelihood and with employees who would like to remain in work because people pay their dues

when I was manager of a plumbers merchant my assistant once charged someone £18.80 for an item which should have been £188.00, the fellow paid cash and hurried off.

When I realised what he (my assistant) had done I rang the chap and asked for the difference, he told me to take a running jump.

I phoned the company solicitor who told me "the law says if you sell at less than cost that is up to you" there is no comeback.

However, if the customer had taken it on his account I could have debited his account.

Explains why he paid cash and b*gg**** off real quick.
