Just have to check laptop connects automatically once lease expires.

    Thx

You shouldn't notice anything - the expiry/renewal should happen in the background.
How do I add a signature?

Hi can I just ask within the 'Wireless properties' as well as having 'ticked' Connect automatically when network is within range, should I also 'tick' Connect even if network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)?

Your network will probably be broadcasting its network name, because there's no good reason for turning it off (whatever some people say). So, no, no need to tick that box!

This [Microsoft Technet] article describes non-broadcast networks, [and] why Microsoft recommends against their use.

Can't understand why people in home situations bother with DHCP. It's not like you have 250 different machines tramping over in and out of your house. Personally I'd set up your adapter wireless or ethernet to use static IP on the machine itself. If you want you could set the DNS to use say 8.8.8.8 on one dns server (google) and Opendns x.x.x.x(can't remember of the top of my head what it is and use your ISP's dns for the third (depending on the version of windows you have it may not be possible) or just set it to the router's IP address and let it forward the DNS requests to what is on there. My router has a dynamic range of 4 i.e 192.168.x.250-253 for occasional visitors. Never gives me any problems with drop outs/lease renewal, wireless printer and NAS/WDTV/Humax all set as static.

Uh? DHCP removes the need to worry about manually allocating ip addresses. I have 19 devices currently connected to my home network. It's much easier to do this from one device with DHCP.

The value of DHCP is that it's one fewer thing to bother about when trying to get a connection for a PC, laptop, tablet, or netbook (:().

You just connect the ethernet cable from the device to the hub/router/whatever, and it immediately works! Similarly for a WiFi connection, you just put in the wireless connection password, and it (almost) immediately works, too.

There's value in having a few devices with a static IP addresses, such as printers.

Agreed. The only things with static address (reservations on my DHCP server) are my servers and the router.
