Mobile phone use in Australia (Aussie pay as you go?)

Hi!

I'm travelling to Australia for 3 weeks in August this year and wouldlike to know if anyone has used local pay as you go top up for mobile phones?

I have an unlocked iPhone 3GS and would like to be able to use data (for the maps application) as well as the Internet and some calls. Can anyone suggest the cheapest and best supplier for me to be able to do this, rather than use my English O2 SIM?

You'll be looking at Telstra's 850MHz network if you are looking for all round coverage. Rates. If you are staying in just the larger Metropolitan centres, you can use something like Virgin Mobile. But outside the Metro centres, they use a 3G frequency not compatible with your phone, so it will default to GPRS/EDGE.

Does using GPRS/EDGE mean that I won't be able to use iPhone Maps anyway? Also, what ramifications will this have for costs? Do you know how much it will cost me, or is there somewhere Ican find out?
