We recently bought a load of Parioli chopped toms from Tesco when they were on offer and my goodness...what a difference! I have been using value for soups and things where I only want a slight tomato taste, but I couldn't go back to value again for pasta sauces. I agree that for a tomatoey sauce passata is much better value. I tend to mix a good quality tin of tomatoes with a carton of passata for a big batch of pasta sauce - I half it and freeze some.

I like ASDA smartprice ones. they have lots of liquid in them. The sainsburys ones are nice but I use the liquid for the base of sauces, sainaburys don''t have much liquid.

I also prefer morrisons own passata over the others if it helps any? It seems thicker and tastier.x

Waitrose own brand are extremely good, not too cheap but I can use can whereas other brands I'd have to use two. Tesco have several brands of tinned tomatoes half price at the mo including napolina and another brand which is Tesco own brand in disguise. If I had more space I would have stocked up. I don't see any difference between cheap and expensive in other canned stuff but I have noticed with some of the very cheap tinned tomatoes they taste metallic and sour and you have to cook them for a long time to get rid of this xx

I buy Napolina, but only when on offer. I use to have the basics, but the juice was just so thin I had to change.

I'm going to try to improve my arrabiate sauce (currently use Sainsbury's cartons with oil and garlic but want to change to plain tins of tomatoes and do more of the flavouring myself).

Tesco have Parioli and Cook Italian brands on offer just now. I'm wondering if the latter is the tesco ones under disguise? Any opinions on the best ones to try?

I've got fresh garlic and parsley ready, I just need to be brave enough to put more oil in the pan!!!

I used to buy a lot of whole plum tomatoes from Lidl. I keep a couple of tins in the larder but now I tend to use the passata. This is handy for gazpacho as well, whereas tinned tomatoes do often taste too sour for that. Lately I have been buying YS fresh tomatoes and using those as well.
