I buy Cirio chopped tomatoes - they are really good :) I always stock up when on offer... which they are at the moment, packs of 4 tins half price in Waitrose/Ocado :) Time for me stock up!

They are very good quality, but I can't justify paying full price for them. That's why I always stock up - there's no going back to the cheapies now

I started buying Lidl after reading they got ,I think Good Housekeeping award (not 100% so don't quote me ;))
They are brilliant. Both the chopped and whole varieties.
Price wise not sure but under 40p per can.

I've been trying various ones recently and have decided I like the aldi Sweet Harvest the best. They are not Aldi's cheapest but still a good price.

Unlike previous poster I found the Lidl (Nostria?) brand ver disappointing - far too much watery liquid for my liking.

It's a very personal thing. I've "downshifted" all the way down to ASDA SmartPrice and Tesco Everyday Value ones, and find both of them OK.

PS. I always buy whole plum tomatoes. Plum tomatoes can be used either whole or chopped. It's difficult to stick chopped tomatoes back together again if you need to use them whole.

  • I use 2 types depending on how important they are to the overall taste of the dish. For example, if I am making a pasta sauce or something similar I would use a good quality can (e.g. Cirio which I stock up when discounted, just as Sophie4120 above). If I am making something that contains many other ingredients apart from tomatoes then I use Tesco Value.

Aldi Sweet harvest - whole plum toms - next buy the chopped as prefeer the plum. Thick rich juice, really lovely toms. If i want a smooth texture aldi passata whcih at 29p for 500g is cheaper than toms

I haven't used tinned tomatoes for years as I find passata is much better. Last time I bought them for Lidl they were 29p per carton (300ml?), so seemed much better value than the watery stuff packed into tins.

ETA: it is in fact 500ml like the Aldi:

Lidl chopped tomatoes together with a good squeeze of tomato puree - also Lidl.

Sainsbury's own, but normally team them up with passata and/or puree, depending on what I'm cooking. Tinned toms add a great element to a balti with no need for puree or passata, for example, but I'd add one of those for a tomatoey dish.

I buy the same, though chopped. I have actually had chopped toms on toast/crumpets before.
