If you don't fancy statins and you can make the adjustment of basically giving up meat, there is evidence that a very low fat diet can reduce cholesterol.

Dr Dean Ornish's programme for reversing heart disease is the best known version of this kind of diet.

And if you look at the link I posted earlier you'll see there's evidence that Atkins is more effective than Ornish.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Having felt very under the weather for the past week i was finally dragged to the Doctor's today by my wife and i was diagnosed with a multitude of illnesses which need attending to quite quickly--i live abroad and the doctor is shocked my raised cholestral level hasnt been thoroughily before and i will have loads of scans and tests tomorrow---i get hypercodrical when i feel ill and start asking questions on any medical 'news' events!!---the cholestral count is way down in magnitude of revelations from today
a whole list of lifestyle changes will be needed and popping a statin if needed is the least troubllesome!!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -

In my experience of them i cant praise them highly enough. Im 56 now and have been on them since i was about 40 due to hereditory high cholesterol. For years i was just at the higher end of the acceptable range as in 5.9. Then it shot up to 7.5 and the dr prescribed Simvastatin for me. For a few years i was on a 40mg tablet nightly and my levels came down to just over 3
. I dont and never have had any side effects so i guess im lucky in that respect. However since 40mgs was quite a high dose i thought id try with a 20mg tablet to see how i fared with that as no one really wants to take tablets do thay ? I am now still on 20mg and my cholesterol level is 4.9. As this is ok im still on that dosage. I have a liver function test every year or so, not through dr s prompting anymore but because i like to know if my livers still working properly. Hope that helps.

i was depressed and asking because i have a herniated disc in my back that had caused a catalogue of side effects--swellings that affect stomach and liver and many things!
i think statins are good as long as the side affects arent bad---anything that reduces the level of cholestral has makes sense!???mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -
My uncle has been on them for many years as he has a heart condition. If my GP thought it would be good for me to take them then I wouldn't hesitate but have just had my cholesterol checked and it was fine.
I do have huge reservations with everyone being medicated though regardless of health issues.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

Hi,
I am 34 and have been taking 40mg of Simvastatin for almost a year now. Touch wood, I have had no problems at all. I was prescribed them as I am type 1 diabetic, should normally start them at 40 but I started early as after 17 years of being diabetic, I was starting to develop diabetic retinopathy. Happy to say that I have just had the all clear for my eyes, so thank you statins - no need for laser! As with all medicastion though, different effects for different people, my uncle refuses statins as he had had problems with them.0
